ESC 23 – Late-Breaker host, Dr Harriette Van Spall (McMaster University, CA) is joined by Prof Giuseppe Rosano (St George’s Hospitals NHS Trust University of London, UK), President of HFA to distil the key messages from the 2023 Focused Update of the 2021 ESC Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic heart failure.

Prof Rosano summarises the retained ejection fraction-based heart failure classification system, encompassing HFrEF, HFmrEF, and HFpEF, while emphasising the necessity for change. Dr Van Spall asks Prof Rosano about the new HFpEF recommendations. They discuss the role of finerenone and SGLT2 inhibitors in the prevention of heart failure. Prof Rosano delves into recommendations made following the results from the STRONG-HF trial. They close the discussion on strategies for implementing the guidelines.
