Prof Simon Stewart, FESC, FAHA, FHFA, is a National Health & Medical Research Council of Australia (NHMRC) Senior Principal Research Fellow based at Torrens University Australia.
A cardiovascular nurse scientist and health services researcher, Prof Stewart is internationally recognised for his efforts to understand and respond to an evolving epidemic of chronic heart disease across the globe. This includes leadership (as principal/co-principal investigator) of seminal surveillance studies in Australia, Europe and Africa (including the world-famous Heart of Soweto Study first published in The Lancet). Prof Stewart is also a pioneer, via a series of pragmatic, multicentre randomised trials (the first of which was also published in The Lancet), of heart failure management services across the globe.
Supported by the NHMRC of Australia, he continues to lead large-scale community surveillance and disease management trials with profound translational impact. Consistent with his research achievements he has previously held senior leadership positions at the world-renowned, Baker Institute of Heart Disease (Head, Preventative Cardiology 2007–2014) and Mary MacKillop Institute for Health Research, Australian Catholic University (Inaugural Director, 2014–2017).
In 2020, his seminal contributions to understanding the burden/management of heart failure was recognised by a prestigious Fellowship from the European Society of Cardiology’s Heart Failure Association. He joined the editorial board of Cardiac Failure Review in 2021.
